Sensei Hidetaka Abe has been studying martial arts since he was 13 years old, and is a 7th-degree black belt in Karate and a 2nd-degree black belt in Judo. He studied under Wado Karate founder and Grand Master Hironori Otsuka at Meiji University in Tokyo and was the co-captain of the 1965 All Japan Collegiate Championship team. In 1967, after graduating from college and coaching the Meiji University Karate team for a year, he came to Berkeley and began teaching the UC Karate Club. He has been the head instructor of the club ever since. Sensei Abe continues to be the club’s liaison with the Karate community in Japan and still plays a major role in the club along with other instructors.
