Dr. Russell Ahn Nominated as the President of World Association for Hallyu (Contemporary Korean Culture) Studies

The University of California Martial Arts Program is pleased to announce that UCMAP Director Dr. Russell Ahn has been nominated as the president of World Association for Hallyu (contemporary Korean culture) Studies, WAHS. The WAHS is an officially recognized nonprofit organization by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea. Since its inception in 2013, Dr. Ahn has been serving as K-Sports Director and the Regional President of WAHS in the United States. Under WAHS, there are more than 36 regional offices through 26 countries in the world. Moreover, WAHS’s academic endeavors have been expanded its capacity to more than ten Korean cultural studies such as K-pop, K-drama, K-movie, K-food, K-sports (Taekwondo and other traditional martial arts), K-cosmetics, K-medicine, K-architecture, K- fashion and Korean language.

Dr. Ahn humbly accepted the position because he continues to promote Korean culture through Korean martial arts such as Taekwondo, Yongmudo and Kumdo along with his international involvement of martial arts and university sports. Moreover, his academic background of linguistics and Korean language would extend his capacity to serve the position.

Dr. Ahn will continue to serve as Taekwondo Technical Committee Chair (TCC) of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Furthermore, he is also in other international leadership positions within the World Taekwondo (International Sports Federation of Taekwondo) and the World Martial Arts Committee (International Governing Body of Martial Arts). This impressive array of responsibilities continues within the University of California, Berkeley Martial Arts’ leadership, as the founding director, Dr. Ken Min, also hails from the university.
